Sri Krishna Janmashtami, the appearance day of Lord Krishna, is the most auspicious day on which Lord Krishna appeared in this world to please his devotees and annihilate the demons. The tenth canto of Srimad Bhagavatam  provides a beautiful narration of this entire pastime.
This auspicious festival would be celebrated on 18th August this year. This page offers all the information you may need about this festival and to facilitate your visit.
Janmashtami, the birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated with great devotion in the August/September months, on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksh or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadon, in the whole of north India. Temples and homes are beautifully decorated and lit. An attractive feature of the celebrations are cribs & other decorations depicting stories of Lord Krishna’s childhood. There are five main “Jhankis” of Janmashtami which depict the entire sequence of events from Lord Krishna’s birth to his being discovered in Gokul.
Kansa, the king of Mathura was a very cruel tyrant. His tyranny spared no one, even the sages had to bear the brunt of this. Finally the gods could tolerate no more of it and in a dream Kansa was told that his evil reign would be brought to an end by his sister Devaki’s son who would kill him. The cowardly tyrant immediately threw his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudev in prison so that he could kill all the sons born to Devaki.

In many families fast is observed, however, one meal is allowed. This is known as phalhar, which consists of fruits, singhare ki puri, mithai, curd etc. Generally the devotees prepare those food items which are considered to be the favorite of Lord Krishna. At the midnight all these scrumptious items are placed in front of Lord Krishna and this called as the ritual of bhog. Later all these scrumptious items are distributed amongst his devotees as Prasada.
Devotees chant all day long the mantras and shlokas to please the lord, creating the religious atmosphere. Chanting of 108 names of Lord Krishna is another ritual that takes place in various temples.Chanting of names is accompanied by showering of flowers on the idol of Lord Krishna.after the Aarti, the fast is over.At dawn, children's footprints, walking towards the house are drawn with "Rangoli".  This indicates the divine entry of God Shree Krishna in the house.
